JOHN LUHR HOBBIES

Photography

I don’t know how or why, but I suddenly gained an interest in photography about 10 years ago. I had no idea where to start or what to do, and I have a very bad eye for art, design and colour. But I knew I liked to take photos.

You can see some of my photos on my John Luhr Photos page to see what I mean about the art/design/colour. But I still love it. I enjoy taking photos of scenery and landscapes, my kids and animals.

Because of that, I enjoy going on bushwalks and hikes to collect awesome photos.

Movies and Television

I love watching movies and television. I used to be an avid reader as well, but can never seem to find the time these days. But I am not one of those people that think television and movies are less than books. Actually, I have read tens of thousands of books in my life, ranging from Marx to Stephen King. And I think that television and movies are just the new books.

I really love epic serial television shows with overarching storylines as opposed to procedural weekly storylines. Some of my favourite television shows are ones like Rome, Sopranos, Justified, and many more.

I also love to watch movies, trying to watch anything and everything. I love movies that are simply and I love movies that are complex. I love movies that don’t try to be something they aren’t and just remain simple (like say Fast and the Furious) and I love movies that are complex and emotional (like say Inception). I won’t let an actor or director or writer get in the way of me watching anything and everything.

Video Games

Not so much anymore (actually, since Alex and Charlotte came around), but I used to be really into video games. I still love to play, often organising game nights at my house (I mean, like LAN nights, or organising a few people to come and play couch co-op). My favourite games of all time are anything made by Cliffy B (Gears of War), Naughty Dog (Uncharted) and the Monster Hunter Series.

The game I invested the most time in was DC Universe Online. Not only did I play a lot of that, I also ran a successful webpage dedicated to helping people to play (thedcuobook). We were generating 100,000 unique visitors per month to the page, had a 12 episode arc podcast that was getting 30,000 people downloading it, and 20,000 people watching each episode of our Day in the Life of a DCUO player web series.

Unfortunately, time got in the way of the hobby and I had to let the webpage and the gaming go. But I still have fond memories of waking up at 5am to participate in 8 man raids with a kooky bunch of people from the UK.

Superheroes

Big DC fan over here. I’ve followed Batman and Batman related things. I have quite a few comics in my collection which I hold onto and will hold onto forever. Whenever a superhero movies comes out, I am there at the very first session. I doesn’t matter which company or who the hero it is. Often I will attend midnight sessions. And for Wonder Woman, I left work at 9:30am to pop over to the cinemas to watch it at 10:00am.

If it’s a Batman movies, I might even watch it 5 times in one day (Batman vs Superman) or even organise a few days off to binge watch every movie in the relevant series.

I just love the way heroes always win. And no matter what, they’ll always keep fighting.

Brazilian Ju Jitsu (martial arts)

Between the ages of 19 and 30 I trained in Ninitsu for a combined 4 years. I achieved a rank of 5th Kyu (3 striped green belt), meaning I was just one ranking away from a brown belt at one dojo. Then took a break and moved to a new dojo and found the training to be completely different. So I decided myself to drop myself back to white. At this dojo I progressed rapidly through the ranks.

I took a long break from martial arts and recently started practicing Brazilian Ju Jitsu (BJJ). I attend the myBJJ gym in Camperdown, training under Professor Mario Sergio Yokoyama. I strongly encourage everyone and anyone to give it a try. Not only is BJJ a great martial art for discipline and self defense, it is also amazing exercise. Don’t waste your time going to the gym, do BJJ instead.

Under the tutelage of the amazing myBJJ instructors, I continually achieve new levels and have started to compete in tournaments.
